Project description
By 2010 there will be close to 200,000 orphaned children in the Kingdom of
Swaziland . About 40% of Swaziland 's population is HIV positive and large numbers of parents are dying of AIDS leaving behind many families headed by children. There is an associated and growing problem of overcrowded homes often with five or more children sleeping, eating and living in a single roomed hut made of mud and sticks. Many of these structures are dilapidated and in need of repair.
The Building Project aims to assist these vulnerable children and other needy families by helping to repair existing homes and construct new ones where
appropriate. It also involves various other small infrastructure community projects such as developing small gardens, fences, water projects, swings etc. all with the aim of assisting vulnerable children and needy families. Where possible traditional building methods are used (such as mud bricks) to be environmentally sensitive and cost effective whilst adding numerous other benefits.
The project involves working at a various sites within communities around
Swaziland. Needs are identified on an on-going basis and projects planned accordingly. Some activities take place at community care centres others at the homes of needy families. As a volunteer you would help do the hands-on building work for these small infrastructure projects under the guidance of our staff or building foreman. You would work with local community representatives and be encouraged to develop and share your skills in a cross cultural exchange that should have far reaching benefits.
